Grief & Loss

Grief is a natural response to loss. It’s the emotional suffering you feel when something or someone you love is taken away. Often, the pain of loss can feel overwhelming. You may experience all kinds of difficult and unexpected emotions, from shock or anger to disbelief, guilt, and profound sadness. The pain of grief can also disrupt your physical health, making it difficult to sleep, eat, or even think straight. These are normal reactions to loss—and the more significant the loss, the more intense your grief will be.

Do you actually know how to be sad?

The steps in grief are commonly thought of as the 5 stages (developed by Kübler-Ross). These stages are denial, anger, bargaining, sadness, and acceptance. It is thought that these stages will shift our sadness to happiness. The trick is these stages are not linear, and happiness may not be the final result. In reality, a great loss can simply conclude in a place of acceptance rather than closure/happiness. By allowing ourselves to express sadness in supportive therapeutic environments, we can move forward with loss while maintaining the capacity for joy. Knowing how to be sad is just as important as allowing yourself to be sad. We can support these expressions in healthy and long-lasting methods within therapeutic work. Courtesy of the National Library of Medicine
